Quotes and tips on anger management

By  bowing our head to ground and paying obeisances to others we can reduce our ego and there by overcome negative emotions.  Don't do it blindly.  While bowing down just think "please forgive me if I have done anything wrong; knowingly or unknowingly". This can reduce our negative emotions such as anger, jealousy etc.

Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.  ----------- Buddha

Attain the stage of Narayana Smrithi.  ie stage of constant rememberance of Lord Narayana.  It has to be developed through practice.  It means to lead a simple life according to Narayana's insturctions as it is given in the Vedic literature.  One should have no interest other than the interest of the Lord.    Believe that the Lord will protect me always which is otherwise called as 'Saranagathi.  To depend on the Lord exclusively.  I will depend on the Lord for my knowledge for my food etc.  He is our father.  We must not be hopeless.  We must always be hopeful of the mercy of the Lord.  Practicing in this way, we can develop positive and soft qualities.

We must lead our life according to the desire of Krishna.  Each day we must do our duties according to Krishan's interest. Kunti devi prayed to Krishna "oh Krishna, you are so powerful, please cut the strings of attractions which I have towards material desires.  The first of which is the attraction towards my family"

When a man is perplexed or confused, he cannot find the solution by himself.  Agitating the mind or intelligence and finding a solution will not be helpful.  We will have to find an answer from outside.  Arjuna faced this and he asked Krishna.  Brahma faced this also.  So, whenever we are confused in our life we have to take guidance from a higher authority, who is capable of doing this.

 Bhagawad Gita verse 2.7
Karpanya dosopahata svabhavah
prcchami tvam dharma sammudha cetah
yac chreyah syan niscitam bruhi tan me
sisyas te ham sadhi mam tvam prapannam

Here we can see that when Arjuna got confused he surrendered before Lord Krishna and accepted Lord as his Guru.  In material world, we seek guidance from doctors, teachers, lawyers, pharmacist etc in every walk of our life.  Similarly, to overcome our negative emotions and developing a strong personality we have to seek the help of those who have accomplished such qualities in their life.

Within each one of us - there is a lotus and a cactus.  When ever we do or think something bad about others, it is food for the cactus.  We develop skin diseases because we think bad about others and do harm to others.  When we cry for relief of pain we will not be helped but when we repent for each of the act done by us then our sufferings will reduce.

How to overcome Anger, Pride, and Jealousy?

Anger is common among us and a wide majority of us get angry often.  But, we may think – “I am not a proud person” or “I don’t get envious”.  Wait a minute, the moment your boss appreciates your colleague more than he deserves; you can see yourself getting irritated.  “Oh! He doesn’t deserve that much praise."  So anger, pride and jealousy are all there within most of us.  We need to overcome it by changing our attitude.

Anger can be controlled by tolerance.

How will I get tolerance?

Tolerance is the result of forgiveness.

And one who cannot forgive is full of pride.

Pride

Pride will bring great lose to us.  When we become proud we think that we are the best.  That means Krishna is not the Supreme but I am the Supreme.  So in order to correct us, Lord will give us a lesson.  He may take away everything we have and then we may realize and correct ourselves.  He is the cause of all causes – Sarva Kaarana Kaaranam ( Brahma Samhita).

Iswara Parama Krishna Sachidanantha Vigraha
Anaadiradir Govinda Sarva Kaarana Kaaranam

When we understand that God is Supreme and we are nothing in front of Him, then our pride is gone.

Pride in victory or moroseness in defeat is useless.  One should fully depend on the Supreme Personality of Godhead who is responsible for the victory and defeat of all living entities – Srimad Bhagavatham 6.12.7 by His Divine Grace A.C.Bhakthivedantha Swami Srila Prabhupad

Jealousy

Our life is the result of our own karma.  Someone else life depends on their karma.  Our karma does not depend on their karma and vice versa.  Today you may be the winner.  That is the result of your karma.  There is no use in being proud.  The next day your friend or colleague may be the winner.  That is the result of their karma.  Now there is no use in being jealous.  Jealousy is often seen among those who are having similar nature.  When we are jealous we may wish bad things to happen to them.  So the best way to overcome jealousy is to wish good things to happen to them.  Include them in your prayers.  Pray to the Lord to show them the right path.  You can seen miraculous changes happening.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead is unlimited.  His mercy is also unlimited.
“If Krishna is giving his mercy to one person today, then He may give his mercy to me also on some other day.  He is the reservoir of all opulence – wealth, strength, beauty, fame, knowledge and renaissance.  Krishna’s reservoir is not limited like our bank balance.  From our account if we reduce an amount, the balance is a lesser amount.  But for Krishna, the reservoir is not reduced upon giving as mentioned in Isopanishad.

“Om poorna matha poorna mitham poornath poorna muthachyathet poornasya poornamathaya poornamevavashishyathe”.
(Isopanishad).

So if God is giving to one person today.  He will also give to me tomorrow when I am in need or when I become eligible for that.  Each one has his own identity and position in Lord’s world.  So I will surely get my share and position.  Krishna’s love and mercy is unlimited.  He will love me and the other person equally.  So there is no use of envy” – Practice thinking like this and your envy will surely be gone.

We may search for tips to overcome negative traits like anger, pride, envy etc from our character.  But most of the search results may prove to be philosophical.  Practice the tips given above and you can see wonderful changes in your character and behavior.  Do practice and send your feedback.

Anger Management by the use of Bhagawad Gita and the scriptures

Anger management!  Again the popular topic!  And that too connected with the scriptures.  What has Bhagawad Gita to do with anger management?  We already know a lot about this topic and we also know a lot of tips to control our emotions.  So what is the need to talk more about this?  Are you wondering in this way?

Here I have some definitions of anger

1.A Strong feeling of displeasure aroused by real or suspected wrong.
2. A response to the frustration of an unresolved problem.
3. One may get angry when someone hurt our ego or accuses our loved ones.

Of course the topic is familiar.  But this is a different approach.  We have been living and reacting as we liked for years.  It included all sorts of emotions.  We would get stress and become angry, violent, cry at times.  It has become a habit.  The world around tells us a lot of methods to overcome this.  But they are all techniques to suppress our emotions.  Moreover, we cannot overcome an age old habit all of a sudden.  Again, the stress which we face from around the world is very high.  What ever is suppressed is not removed for ever.  To remove the reaction we have to remove it from the root.

It is clearly mentioned in Bhagavad Gita sloka 2.62 and 2.63.

dhyatoh visayan pumsah
sangas tesupajayate
sangat sanjayate kamah
kamat krodho bhijayate

krodhah bhavati sammohah
sammohat smriti vibhramah
smriti bhramsad buddhi naso
buddhi sasat pranasyati

When the senses contemplates on material objects, gradually attachment arises which leads to lust and from lust, anger develops which leads to delusion then to bewilderment of memory.  When memory is bewildered, intelligence is lost, and then fall down to material world occurs.
(Bhagavad Gita As It Is by His Divine Grace A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada)

So it all starts from seeing something and contemplating on it.  We cannot close our eyes and stop looking around us.  That is not at all practical.  Then what will we do.

Take the example of a kid who is watching television.  He watches an advertisement of a new toy and asks his father to buy him that.  Suppose the father buys him that toy, after sometime the kid is bored of that toy.  He needs something new.  When he does not get the new toy, then there is frustration which leads to anger first and then lose of memory later.  He needs more.  Or if the father refuses to buy the toy at the first time, then also there is frustration.  So what is the root cause.  The cause is our desire and desire arises due to our thinking about what we have seen.  When we watches an advertisement, we may start thinking about it.  If we can avoid thinking about it, then our battle is half done.  If we decide that we will not buy things unnecessarily then we need not be frustrated by luxurious lives around us.

Quotes about anger

  • We generally feel that every problem can be solved. and when we feel some problem cannot be solved, we become frustrated.

  • Different people have different boiling points that is why some body gets angry within few seconds and someone else has patience for some more time.

  • Becoming angry at someone means holding charcoal in your hand.

  • If your heart is like a volcano, how will flowers bloom there.

  • Anger is one word short of danger.
  •
  • Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.

  • By developing love, compassion, sympathy and forgiveness we can control our anger.

I know what you are thinking.  Hmm... Its easy to preach than to practice.  Try these tips

1.  Even if we see anything around us, do not keep thinking about it.  After all it may not be of any use to us.

2.  Try to lead a simple life.  Have whatever is necessary, but do not go after unwanted luxury.  Before desiring anything just ask ourselves "Do I really need it".

3. Try to be calm and loving.  Love can tie any person who is agitated.

4. Develop forgiveness, compassion and let go off.  Think that the other person is not educated or broad minded enough to understand you.  Just have sympathy for him in your mind and genuinely co-operate with them.

Learn the art of forgiving.  Try to let go in times of dispute.  Forgiveness is the quality of top class devotees.  When someone comes to you in a mood to get anger, just let it go off.  Give them a smile and give a calm look, their anger will be melted.  Instead if we ourselves are going to have a hot debate the scene will become worse.  See the magic working in a few days.

Try the tips and do not forget to let me know your experience.

Bhagawat Gita Chapter 2 verse7

Are you full of miseries and confused in life?  Here you can get the solution to your confusion.

Karpanya doshopahatha swabhavah
Prichhami tvam dharma sammooda cheta
Yet shreya sya nishchitam broohi tanme
Shishya steham shadi mam tvam prapannam

Arjuna is confused about what to do in the battlefield and he surrenders to Krishna and asks Him to give proper guidance.  Just like Arjuna, each one of us are confused in this material life.  So, we have to take shelter of Krishna.  Krishna's own words are given in the form of  Bhagavat Gita.  Bhagavat Gita and Bhagavad Gita alone can give us guidance to overcome the miseries and confusions of the material world.

Do you believe in soul?

"Do you believe in soul?  What if there is no soul and we have only this life?  So let's enjoy it to the maximum".  This was the opinion of one of my friends.  I found it very difficult to convince her, although I was absolutely sure about the existence of soul.

Just think of your family relations.  We love all our family members - parents, grandparents, kids.  We are ready to sacrifice anything for them.  When something bad happens to them, we suffer a lot.
But suppose your grandfather suddenly dies one day.  What will you tell others?  You need leave from office and you go to your boss.  What will you tell him?

Yes!

"Sir, I need leave as my grandfather passed away."

When you reach home the body is kept there.  Then why did you tell your boss that your grandfather left?  The body is already there.  This is the body which you loved for years.  Still you are lamenting and telling that he left.  If your grandfather was that body then why do you cry.

So who has left?  As the body is still there.  It is something else that has gone.  That is the soul.  When the soul has gone the body is of no use.  So we do not keep the body with us even if that is the body which we hugged and kissed all these years.

The body is of no use when the soul has left.  So we consider that our original identity is the soul.  Each one of us has got a soul.  It is eternal.  The soul cannot be injured, burned or drowned.  No one can cause any harm to the soul.  So we need not lament on some soul leaving his body.  Even if the soul leaves his body he will get another new body.

Hope the idea of the existence of soul is clear now.  If you still have doubts you can get more examples from

What does the Vedas teach us?

I need not tell you that the Vedas play an important status in Hinduism.  What does the Vedic literature tell us?  What is the meaning of Veda?  Why is it given so much importance?  What is the knowledge which the Vedic literature provides us?

The word 'Veda' means 'book of knowledge'.

The Vedas describes the three modes of nature.

1. Saatvik or Satvaguna - mode of goodness
2. Rajasvik or Rajoguna - mode of passsion
3. Thamasik or Thamoguna - mode of ignorance

Nowadays, people have a mix of all these modes of nature.  Prominent among them being the mode of ignorance.

The book of knowledge, Veda is meant to teach us our true identity.  It is intended to make us understand and realize our true self - the identity of the spirit soul.  Vedas want to bring some rules and regulations in the life of the people.  By these rules and regulations one can control the three modes of nature.

Bhagavad Gita is considered the essence of all the Vedas.  In Bhagavad Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna to rise above the Vedas.  Why does Krishna asks his friend like this?

Krishna wanted Arjuna to grow higher than the Vedas and rise above the control of the three modes of nature.  It means one should understand his spiritual identity and should not be taken away by the material possessions which are due to the effect of the three modes of nature.  This is possible only through Bhakthi Yoga.

Legend behind Guruvayur Temple

The temple of Guruvayur is situated in Thrissur District, Kerala, India.  The temple is believed to be around 1000 years old.  The place is also called 'Bhooloka Vaikundam' which means the abode of the Lord Vishnu on earth.  The place is also called 'Dwaraka of the South'.

The deity of Guruvayur is believed to be 5000 years old.  It has been worshiped by Lord Krishna himself at Dwaraka.  At the time when Lord Krishna was about to leave this world - he gave this deity to Udhava.  Udhhava was instructed to find a suitable place to install the deity.  Lord Krishna told Udhhava that this deity would always be there to rescue the sufferers in this world.  At that time, there was a huge flood and the whole city was immersed in water.

The deity was floating through the water when, Brihaspathi - Guru of Devas, and his disciple Vayu - God of Wind found the deity. Now they needed a place to install this deity.  They went around the world to find a suitable place to install the deity of Lord Krishna.  They reached a place, now Kerala where Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathy were present.  Guru approached Lord Siva to get permission to install the deity.  Lord Siva allowed the deity to be installed near a lake.  The place thus got the name Guruvayur.

So at Guruvayur, Lord Krishna, still offers his blessings to all his devotees.  There is a temple of Lord Siva at Mammiyoor and the pilgrimage to Guruvayurappan is considered complete only if you visit Mammiyoor.

Thought for the day

Last week I visited a nearby Krishna temple.  The poojari of this small temple is famous for his devotion.  He is not money minded and gives almost all of the dakshina which he gets to his assistants.

In a casual talk, he said that the Lord Sri Krishna is our creator. So he will be concerned about us and will be our well wisher.  He will give all of us the very best than we can ever imagine.  After reciting all the mantras and doing kirtans and bhajans, visiting temples daily; if we cannot help the needy, there is no use.  As we start chanting mantras, the Lord within us - the Paramatma - will help us to be peaceful and we will be able to identify the Lord within others as well.

So as chanting progress, we must be able to understand the needs of the suffering and help them as well.  I am sharing it here with my friends so that we all can implement this philosophy in our life.  I am sure this thought if implemented can bring great changes in our life.

Essence of Bhagavat Gita

  • Who ever surrenders fully to the supreme soul will be protected by Him.

  • Leave everything to the Lord, including your wealth, status, education everything and He will take care of all your worries - job, health, fortune everything.

  • We did not bring anything with us when we came to this world.  That means what ever we got we got it from here. We got only that much which was set aside by the Lord for us.  We will have to leave everything when we go back.  In that way,  we become a care taker of his wealth.

  • Bringing God in all our actions and always remembering Him, will bring peace and happiness.

  • It does not mean that one has to give up his duties.  All the duties have to be done properly. At the same time we can think of him while doing the duties.

  • Do not worry about the results of our action.  What ever the result be, it is the Lord's will.  Accept it.

  • Be humble and think that you are at the lowest level.

  • It is we who decides about taking the first step towards knowing God, then he will give the required push so that we make fast advancements soon.

Does soul really exist?

"Can you prove the existence of soul scientifically?"

It is the most common question which I have heard people around me ask.  Having read a lot about rebirth I was convinced that we have a soul.  But to make others understand was not so easy.  That too, when they are sure about the nonexistence!

So, I had to keep my mouth shut.  This article is a humble attempt to clear the doubt about soul or spirit with few simple examples.  I am not trying to exhibit scientific proofs.  We can think of some common examples in a logical way.

Who am I?

When we say, "I" what does we refer to?  Is it son of this particular father?  Is it our education?  Is it our job?  Is it our social status?

When we do not have this social status, still this "I" is there?  What is that?  We may say that it is this body.  Is it so?  Do we refer to the body when we say "I"?  Just ponder over this for a while.  Meanwhile, we can discuss some other example.

When someone dies, we say "the person has left the body" or "he is no more".  The body may not be cremated.  Still we say that he has left his body.  Why do we say he is no more, when we have not even cremated the body.  The body is there.  Why do we not say that the person is lying there?

Existence of soul

So what has left the body?  It is the soul or the spirit.  It is because of the soul within our body that we are able to perform our duties.  Once the soul leaves the body there is no use of the body.  So when we say "I", we refer to the soul.  The real "I" is the soul or the spirit.

So the answer is "yes, the concept of existence of soul or spirit is real".

Why people disbelieve in the existence of soul?

If the real self is the soul, then why do people disbelieve in soul?  The common reason is "we have not seen it".  They don't believe in things which they have not seen with their eyes.  They do not know how the soul or the spirit looks like.  They are ready to believe only if they see the soul.  People need scientific evidence so as to believe in anything including existence of soul.

Have we seen all the things that we believe in?  "No".  Someone who has actually seen things or experienced will tell us .  We believe in those people.  Similarly, we need the help of learned people to know about whether the soul exist or not.

We have not gone to moon.  But we know about how it is in moon.  How do we believe that?  We did not see.  Only thing is somebody who went there told us.  Some person who had direct experience of the moon told us about it.  The person who had direct experience of moon is authorized to talk about it.  So we need an authorized person who can tell us about soul.

Scriptures about existence of soul.

Spiritual scriptures such as Bhagavad Gita explains the existence of soul scientifically.  It is not written by man kind.  It was delivered to Arjuna by Lord Krishna himself.  So it is an authorized scripture.  Bhagavat Gita explains soul scientifically -Why should I read Bhagavad Gita?

Think of our body.  We have a body, which changed from baby to kid and then to youth.  Do we have the same body which we had when we were babies?  Does the same cells exist now?  The answer is "No".  This has scientific evidences.  We no longer possess the same body, which we took birth in.  So, the body keeps on changing from baby, then kid, youth, old age and so on.  The soul remains in this body during this change, from baby to old age and then the soul enters another body in the same way it changed from baby to kid or from kid to youth.  That means the soul transmigrates from one body to another.  But the soul or spirit remains unchanged.

Characteristics of soul

1.Soul has no birth or death.

Bhagawad Gita 2.13 says

dehino smin yatha dehey
kaumaaram youvanam jaraa
thatha dehanthara prapthir
deeras thatra na muhyathi

As the soul passes from a kid to youth and then to old age, the soul takes a new body after going through the old age.  One who has this knowledge is not afraid of it.

2. Soul cannot be destroyed

nainam chinthanthi shastrani
nainam dahati paavaka
na chainam cleydayanthyapo
na shoshayathi maarutha

Soul cannot be cut by weapons.  It cannot be destroyed by fire.  Soul cannot be destroyed by flood or by wind.

3. Soul is eternal

achchedyo yamadaahyo ya
macledyo shoshya eva cha
nithya sarvagatha stanu
rachalo yam sanathana

Soul cannot be broken, burnt, diluted or dried.  It is eternal and above all changes.  Soul cannot be changed or destroyed.  It is all pervading.

4. Soul is infinitisimal

The Supreme Soul or paramatma is infinite.  While the jeevatma or the soul is infinitesimal.  The spirit or the soul has the size of 1/10000 of the tip of the soul.   Soul has same qualities as the Supreme Soul, but the quantity is different.

By all these slokas I would like to confirm that soul exist and it is eternal.  It is the soul which remains for ever, even after we leave this body.

Hope, the explanation about soul was useful.  If you have any doubts, feel free to mention it.
